Running Your Own Call of Duty Server

Call of Duty Server

Call of Duty Server

If you have ever played Call of Duty online, you have played it on someone’s Call of Duty Server. It is a server that makes it possible to play an online game with or against other players. Initially when Call of Duty first hits the market, the maker’s game producer will be responsible for setting up and managing several servers to get participants started in playing the game. There are also many other die-hard gamers who will set up their own servers.
You might ask yourself why would anyone go through the hassle of setting up, maintaining and running his or her own game server. It simply comes down to one word… control.  When you have your own game server you have the flexibility of the environment in which you get a chance to play.
Let’s say you decide to set up your own Call of Duty server. You will have the option of creating setting for many different modes and maps. There are modes where gamers are rewarded for killing off opponents and given points. This is known as “death match” modes. The winner is determined by who earns the most points or reaches a given score first.
Another popular mode is the Search and Destroy mode. In this mode players form teams and they either defend or attackers. The defenders try to defend military equipment at various sites through out the game while their opponents, the attackers, actually try to destroy the very equipment the defenders are trying to protect.
As the creator of a Call of Duty Server, you can set game modes that are to be played on various maps. Each map provides very unique and different from the next. In one instance, you could have an environment that takes place inside a building or compound while another environment takes place outdoors in the forest. Other settings include deserts, metropolitan cities, and even small rural towns.
The settings you choose as the game administrator of the server creates an interesting impact on the types of strategies and style of game play that a player will encounter in a given match. This makes your Call To Duty game unique and interesting to those that play.
Die hard gamers and technical gaming geeks love having this type of direct control. Sure they can play on the game’s developer server but what fun is that when you can build your own server and build Clans (clubs of gamers who often play together on teams) where you and your team practice and master specific tactics for specific settings.

Running A Call of Duty Server

By now you are probably asking yourself, how does one go about running a Call of Duty Server…very easily from the game software itself.  If you have ever set up a LAN (local area network) game then you've already ran a server.
You have the choice of running this on the same computer you use to play or you can launch the game on its own dedicated server.  When you start hosting large games over the Internet, thing can become slightly more complex and detailed.   What many hobbyist administrators will do is choose to use independent game hosts. These game hosts handle all of the configuration problems,  and provide powerful machines to act as servers. Once the heavy lifting is done, the independent game hosting service provider then hands over controls of the game to the administrator so that he or she can run the game server for their customers and enjoy the game.
